Reflection
In this class, we implemented some of the teaching theory from the Studio Art reading. While we provided a structured project, we gave room for participants to experiment and express themselves. We allowed students to grasp an understanding of the material through repetition. We provided endless magazines and use of glue and scissors so students could practice cutting out and gluing collages. We also gave them as many papers as they wanted to start new collages. We also did not enforce that what they were created needed to be “something”. We allowed them to create without intention. This worked well and all students seemed to be excited and curious of the possibilities of the medium. The timing worked well and students were engaged the whole time. I think it worked well because for this class we really knew our students, so we knew their abilities and what they were interested in.
For me this experience of teaching is extremely valuable. It is rewarding to see the lesson that we came up with and worked hard on, be enjoyed by the participants. It also feels good to know that we are providing participants with the space to be creative and express themselves. I am a firm believer that art skills can benefit virtually any other aspect of life, and is one of the strongest tools of introspection and knowing oneself. It is also amazing to have the space to practice teaching skills and learn what works and what doesn’t before entering the real world and a career in education. The only bump was that we didn’t plan out what each of us would say and specify who would give instruction or lead the closing discussion. This lead to a bit of confusion, but is something that we can work on for next time.
The system of planning for this class is extremely helpful in practicing to become an educator. Learning how to create lesson plans, follow through with them, and then reflect for the next class is an extremely beneficial process in creating more effective classes. It is also giving me the confidence to teach and be in a position of an educator. For the future, I would reconfigure the lesson plans to make sure I always have multiple backup plans for if students finish early or are not engaged. I would also make sure to plan debriefs better by having prompting questions.
