Today's Lesson
In today’s class with ArtAbilities, students created art on non-traditional art surfaces, in order to see the world from a different perspective, wherein anything can be art. The focus was for students to see how the world could be more intriguing by making it their own. The were asked to create a composition on the non-conventional surface of a rock after brainstorming with a predisposed worksheet. The students explored the possibilities of how a rock can be transformed via simply pencils and paint.
Essential Understandings
Understand how artists and designers use everyday objects as materials.
Understand how artists and designers make connections between art and nature.
Understand how artists and designers use the fundamentals of design to create.
Outcomes
Students will be able to...
After completing the project inquiry guide, students will be able to devise their subject matter for the project by analyzing their interest-based responses and choosing one topic to base their project on.
After devising their subject matter for the project, students will be able to produce sketches for their final product by visualizing their chosen interest on paper.
Using their sketches, students will be able to transfer their final ideation onto the rock by using paint to best replicate the imagery.
After creating art on a non-traditional surface, students will be able to make connections between art and the world around us by discussing the shift of an ordinary object to a work of art.

Reflection
For this lesson, we provided an inquiry guide to help the students pick a subject to focus on for their painting. This was successful because it allowed the students to generate ideas and have them written down to be able to reference. We also worked hard on starting the class off with an engaging hook to spark their interest. This seemed to go over well as it evoked questions from the students and made them think more critically about art materials and what can be art. It was also interesting to see the difference ways students depicted some of their favorite things. While some students painted representations of their subjects. others focused on the color pallet or symbols.
One thing that was challenging for some students is the small surface area of the rock. We tried to get large rocks, but some students still had a hard time with the fine motor skills. Some students also stuck to painting only one side of the rock and we had to encourage them to rotate the rock and use all of the surface.
If we were to do this again, I think it would be important to find even bigger rocks that allow more surface for bigger brushes and bigger gestures. We also did not have as much time for discussion at the end of class as we would have liked because the cleanup took so long. Unlike out previous painting activity, we were able to get the students to help us more with clean up this time, but we didn't anticipate how long it would take. If we were to do this again I would make sure we ended the activity with plenty of time for clean up and for discussion.
