In the past, I thought online teaching was impossible to art classes. My idea of online classes was that students logged in and completed their lessons through a series of slides and quizzes online with no direct contact with their teacher or classmates.
This current situation has made my opinions change a lot. I now realize that through online resources such as Zoom, and other communication devices, students can check in and communicate with each other. Teachers can also use tools such as screen-cast-o-matic to record their screens and webcams to walk through a lesson so students get to see their teacher and hear their voice. This way it feels more personal. By using techniques such as choices based learning, teachers can also allow students to use what is available to them, and create things that are personal and pertinent to their situation and environment. This way students have space to be creative and the lessons are open and not restricted.
My addition to my embroidery reflects this change because it represents the ability to create a ripple effect and reach out to students and classmates. The brown, orange-yellowish and green firework like symbol represents the teacher in the middle, using their resources to broadcast out to students and inspire them. It starts with the teacher, if the teacher can set us a creative online plan, and inspire students to look for ways to be creative, then the students will begin to encourage and inspire each other as well.
In the future, I want to be an educator that inspires my students to seek and create art in the everyday whether they or in class or online. Art is not just a school subject, it is a part of life, and teachers can motivate students to incorporate into their everyday.
