When I looked back at my previous art teaching philosophy from the beginning of the semester, most of the core ideas in it have not changes. I always have felt as though art should be a place for personal growth, diversity, collaboration and choice. However, I feel as though in the beginning of the semester I did not have the proper language to explain my thinking, or the knowledge to support and back up my reasoning. I now know about things such as choice based learning, big ideas, accommodations and more, that help me to be more descriptive with my philosophy. For my current philosophy I feel as though it has the same foundation as my first, but the gaps are more filled in to further describe how I believe teaching art should be.
Over the course of the semester I have been adding to this embroidery piece each time I learn something new or have a new idea about teaching art. For this last reflection I decided to use a seed stitch to fill in the holes and the gaps between the pieces of my learning. This is similar to how I “filled in the gaps” in my teaching philosophy. It also is a way of bringing all those previous pieces of information into one cohesive philosophy. I tried to incorporate everything I learned this year into one philosophy that I want to follow as a teacher.
I have learned so much this year about teaching art and gained so much confidence in my skills. I want to implement my philosophy into the classroom by always putting my students first, relating art to the real world, and making the process more important than the product.
