When I was first going into art in university I had a fixed mindset about art skills. I felt like I knew what I was good at and what I wasn’t, and I didn’t really think I could change that. I knew I have always been a good painter, but thought I was a bad drawer. In university, I had to take fundamental classes and intro drawing classes that taught me that with patience and the right methods I could grow in drawing.
Since studying education in university I have learned about the importance of the growth mindset, and how to incorporate that into my teaching as well as apply it to my own life. Growth mindset means pushing students to go father and not limit themselves based on how “good” they are at something. Welcoming failure and avoiding talk like “I can’t draw” is part of the growth mindset.
For this week, I added three new stitches. The orange single stitches are seed stitches, the blue stitch is the lazy daisy, and the blue and orange is couching. All three of these stitches are motifs for growth. I used the couching stitch to create a stem for the daisy. I also used it to encompass everything from the prior weeks to show how you can take what you know and grow from that. The seeds are also mixed in with the stitches that represent ideas from last week, because students can plant seeds for new skills if they have the support.
When I am an educator I want to make sure to foster growth mindsets. I think especially in art, it is easy for people to think you are either good or bad at it, and it is common to hear “I can’t draw” or “I am not creative”. I want to show my students that this is false and that everyone can overcome failure and grow from it, and push themselves to go farther.
