The digital avatars above were created by fourth and fifth graders through the use of a website called Pixton. Students used their STEAM skills to combine art, technology and the concept of identity to create digital self portraits and reflect on how we are all unique
The "Celebrating our Uniqueness" lesson was a lesson I created for fourth and fifth graders, in an attempt to get to know them better myself, and allow them to get to know each other and think about community. Due to the COVID-19 circumstances, I only ever saw these students through a computer screen, for 30 minutes each day for one week only. In addition, we sometimes had up to 60 students in a Zoom call at once. I wanted to create a lesson that could allow us to feel more connected as a community despite out physical distance and differences.
I incorporated a read aloud of "Hair Love" by Matthew Cherry, and artist examples by Ellen Kauffman and Lady Gaga to show how artists across multiple concentrations celebrate uniqueness in their work. I implemented multiple technology tools such as Google Slides, Padlet, Pixton and Seesaw to guide the instruction, creation and sharing portions of the project.
Overall, this lesson allowed all of us to get to know each other better as a class and reflect on big ideas like identity. See the full lesson plan and Google Slides below.
