The artworks above were created by kindergarteners, first and second graders during a lesson about creating art with nature. Students combined their art skills with science and technology to create these artworks from the Earth and then upload them.
I wrote the "Making Nature Art" lesson for kindergarten through 2nd graders towards the end of my second placement in the Spring. As it was getting nicer outside, and students were spending so much time indoors and on screens, I wanted to create a lesson that would get them outside, and not depend on what art materials they have at home.
I incorporated a read aloud of "Anywhere Artist" by Nikki Slade Robinson, as a source of inspiration and ideation for thinking about how artists can create art anywhere and from anything. On the first day of the lesson, students used tools in Seesaw to brainstorm ideas and plan for how they could use materials from nature and turn them into art. On the second day, they gathered materials from outside to create artworks that they uploaded to Seesaw. On the final day of the week, we had a show and share where I screen shared everyone's artworks so we could celebrate creativity together.
Overall, this lesson allowed students to get outside and use their imaginations to see the world as an artist. See the full lesson plan and Google Slides below.
