The art practices above are by sixth grade students who were practicing using some of the principles of design in artwork in order to prepare them to create their final projects.
The "Principles of Design and Connection to Mural" lesson was taught in the middle of our community unit. The school was approached with a great opportunity to work with the community and paint a mural on a shipping container for a local charity called Metro Caring Denver. Each student's final project was to be a mural design that the 8th graders would then combine with all the others into one cohesive mural. Throughout the unit, as students were drafting we were consistently teaching new technical skills or art content that could help them in their final design.
For this lesson, I introduced 5 of the principles of design and through discussion, we connected them to other subjects to determine meanings. I then gave students time to practice using them in art in quick sketches. Finally, we looked at examples of murals and discusses where and how we could see the principles of design being used within them.
Overall, this lesson helped students plan and execute their final mural designs with more engaging compositions, and introduced new language and ways of thinking about art. See the lesson plan and Google Slides below.
