During my Fall Semester of 2019 I had the opportunity to learn about the concepts associated with art education and expand my teaching experience through ART325.
“The intent of this course is to introduce students to concepts of how artistic learning occurs in children, adolescents, and adults—including special populations. Additionally, students will investigate how these concepts shaped art education practice in the past and how it continues to influence current pedagogical practice. This class is meant to provide a foundation for later course work in art education and K-12 art teaching.”
Through this class I was able to receive instruction about education specific to the artistic experience and collaborate with other art educators to gain experience in the field. For five weeks of the class I, along with a group of three other art education students, taught a class of adult special needs learners. Each week we collaborated to design a unique lesson plan that would engage our students and give them the space to explore their personal interests and identities through creative thinking and action. Through this experience, I learned a lot about how to be a successful teacher and my own personal beliefs about education. I was able to gain confidence in my teaching abilities, as well as learn about what makes teaching effective. I also learned a lot about the importance of flexibility, getting to know your students, and how to cater lessons to a group of diverse students. After each week, we were able to come together and asses the failures and successes of our previous lesson and work to improve the next one.
