Last semester when lesson planning, I thought that each part of the lesson plan had to be applicable to each day. I thought that teachers were expected to come up with day by day lessons and did not think about how they connect it to a bigger picture or plan for a unit. I know realize that is helps a lot to come up with a unit idea, and break it down into more specific segments to get lesson focuses.
The reading about the “Big Idea”, and the discussion we had in class helped me to understand this. A big idea is essentially a unit plan. It is vague and overarching and allows multiple concepts to stem off of it. These concepts can then be broken into smaller, more specific elements to create lesson focuses. This helps teachers plan an unit as well as have a reason for why each lesson is important. Each lesson contributes two a larger whole.
For my art piece this week, I wanted to add to my embroidery in a way where I could visualize the concept of the big idea and key concepts. I did the light pink flower stitches to illustrate big ideas. From one big idea, I used a dark blue fly stitch to create almost a family tree-like shape to stem off of that big idea. I then used the coral color French knots to represent the key concepts that come from the big idea.
In the future I definitely want to use big ideas to help me connect my lesson plans together. I also want to plan for a bigger picture, or a whole unit instead of plan lessons day by day and have them end up not connecting. I will use big ideas to guide my teaching and make me thing about what is relevant.
