What were your art teaching/learning perspectives before?
Prior to studying art education in university, my perspective on the subject was very simple. Based off of my experience I assumed the point of art education was to teach students how to be artists. I though all students were given a mold to fit in, and the goal was to become proficient in art skills. The black and white puzzle pieces fitting together represent this. What are your art teaching/learning perspectives now? Since studying art education, I have realized that the point of art education is not to teach students to become artists, but to “think” like artists. Students should be pushed to break out of the mold and express their individuality. The colored puzzle pieces breaking off the mold represent this. How do you want to teach art in the future? In the future, I want to foster an environment that allows students to experiment and celebrate their identities. I want all students to feel comfortable and confident to take risks and embrace failure. The rotated, colorful and decorated puzzle pieces represent this. |
