In the past, I saw art classes as project by project basis, and did not think about the overall connection and growth that students should be making throughout the course. I did not thing about the connections between projects and what the overall goal that students are working towards should be. I know realize that art is much more than that. It is not just crafts, it is an important subject to teach students about bigger parts of the world, and how to develop into a successful person.
Teachers should facilitate this in the classroom by creating lessons with a big idea in mind, and making sure that their lesson plans fit into an overall unit plan. By doing this, we can ensure that students are working towards understanding the big idea, rather than just completing assignments that don't connect or benefit students' growth.
I chose to represent this in my embroider with a flower motif. The orange, pink and maroon flower represents something starting from the middle and blossoming out to reach deeper ideas. The deepening of ideas is represented by the colors getting deeper as the flower grows outward. By teaching and learning this way, students can "blossom" and become people who have a strong center, but also can brand off into various other deep ideas about the world around them.
When I am an art teacher, I want to always be teaching with the whole student in mind. I want to make sure my lessons all connect and teach a deeper concept about the world. We can't ensure that every student will become an artist, so we should aim to teach students to become successful people who are knowledgeable about the world. I will make sure to use unit plans, big ideas, and relate my projects to the real world in order to do so.
